Obama urges Europe to accept Turkey as a member, France rejects

US president Barack Obama urged the European Union to accept Turkey as a full member of the block, Associated Press said.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy immediately rejected the call and said it was up to EU member states to decide on Turkish entry, Reuters said.

Obama spoke on April 5 at a luncheon for leaders of the 27 EU member states in Prague. According to Obama, Europe should seek greater cooperation and closer ties with Islamic nations and accpeting Turkey as a member of the EU would be a positive sign to the Muslim world.

"I have always been opposed to this entry," Sarkozy was quoted by Reuters as saying on France's TF1 television.

"I still am and I think I can say that the immense majority of member states shares the position of France," Sarkozy said.

"Turkey is a very great country, an ally of Europe, an ally of the United States. It will stay a privileged partner. My position hasn't changed and it won't change," Sarkozy said.

Turkey's EU membership talks have been delayed by EU concerns over human rights, a perceived lack of progress on reforms to curb the powers of the military, as well as a long-running territorial dispute with EU member Cyprus.

Obama's tour of Europe will end in Turkey on April 7.

Accept Turkey to the EU and you will wide open your gates to a new and much bigger wave of immigrants, from the Middle East. You will then loose your identity and your culture much faster (cause you will loose it anyway at some point, because of what your greedy European leaders have done so far). In parallel, dark elements from the Middle East will also enter your countries, through Turkey of course. Good luck Europe.

Why Turkey 'are the enemy.Leave us alone the world...This is our land.Never occupied this land will not be able.Do you understand?...Turkey most decent, most honorable, is the most compassionate country. You know this...Europe, America is the killer. These countries are exploiting the country. We will win soon for Canakkale, as in the conquest of Istanbul. This is not similar to the Siege of Vienna

I don't think Turkey will join EU, but not because of their religion. Turkey has absolutely nothing in common with Europe. Turkey invaded Balkans for more than five centuries, fought with Greeks, Kurds...So no, and please don't be so shallow, do you know how many born Muslims are all over Europe, so It has nothing to do with it. The roots go much deeper than that.

I think Turkey should be a member to Europe. People just doesn't get it how beautiful country Turkey is. Turkey is one of the best countries in the World and it's so beautiful, the people and the country mostly looks like a union of Europe. Everyone can have problems but thats between them only. Turkey should be a Europe Member. For the people that says Turkey shouldn't go in Europe as a member, guess what? ITT SHOUULD. Turkey is a wonderful place. Welldone Obama.

Well done to President Sarkozy of France. No country outside the EU has any right to intervene in this matter. My personal view is that Turkey has no place in the EU and i fully share the view of Sarkozy and Merkel.

Cyprus is not in EU Geographically so why were they addmitted to EU? and you retard Turkey is not occupying cyprus! The Cypriot people WANT THEM THERE FOR THERE PROTECTION from enosis freak greece! have you not heard of the AKTIRIS PLAN?

Anonymous xd Wed, Apr 15 2009 20:05 CET

The EU law is that if country X has invaded an EU-member state, country X cannot be an EU-member state. I suggest that if the Turks want to join the EU they take their arses off Cyprus, as the British should also do regarding Ireland. But even if they did that, they are not welcome. Because:
- they still continue to vandalize Cyprus churches, in the part they have under occupation. They do not even preserve them for cultural reasons. They have no sense of human rights, civilized behavior or cultural responsibility. Go to any Cypriot website to [...]

Read the full comment see how the Turks demeane and humiliate religious rights and freedom.
- The "missing" Cypriots issues since the invasion, still remain. These people are supposed to be in some prison, but God knows what they have done to them and in what way they, probably, have died. The Turks are notorious savages, search for documentation on the Armenian genocide, on the Kurdish annihilation, on the horrors to the Greek population from 1453 until 1821.

The USA has supported Turkey enough by selling arms to them and Greece in a 4:1 ratio respectively. In a nutshell, there is an orthodox christian nation on one side and a muslim nation on the other, and the USA is providing the "fuel". Then the USA presidents and diplomats go in public and "support" Greece and Cyprus.......by words, because their actions show differently.
I used to like Obama, but not so much now. He visited Turkey, as if there were not any civilized countries to visit first, he supports their inclusion in the EU against EU law. Furthermore, he compared the reforms for the inclusion of black people in the USA to what should happen with Turkey !?! The former was a just cause, the latter would be like invading Cyprus all over again. Greece and Cyprus are made to get along with Turkey, and are told that they are the ones creating the problems because they oppose the inclusion of Turkey, when -besides the shameful occupation -Turkey continuously even now tresspasses Greek sea and air, justifying this as "military exercises"... No wonder they would act as if Turkey and Greece were one country, if Turkey would join the EU. No question they would indirectly sabotage Greek interests with USA backing. When Turkey was hit by a disasterous earthquake years ago, the Greek government sent blood along with other supplies; this was rejected by Turkey and I think this says it all.
History is better told by those who have suffered. No amount of reform will make Turkey "european" when democracy is an ambiguous entity for the internal politics of that country. No muslim state can be really democratic, ever, as their politics are too strongly guided by religion even if indirectly. Turkey has started disguising itself as a modern state on the outside, because it cannot even tolerate internal opposition, it crashes political and religious disagreement. By disguising as a modern state and seeking to "slide" amongst european nations, its purpose is to mainly gain more power and acceptance to later impose its islamic and imperialistic attitude. If they gain acceptance now, no amount of later opposition will be enough to stop them. A wolf disguised as a sheep....amongst sheep....well, you know how that story goes, Turkey has confirmed it many times in the past......
One last thing: shame to the Greek supporters of Turkey (yes, there exist people like that). Their views are a disgrace to any civilized person.....

I have lost all hope in Obama. It's time for him to stop focusing on his financial matters at the expense of Europe.

Seriously Obama, pick up a history book, we don't want another 1453.

Anonymous Peggy Wed, Apr 08 2009 12:18 CET

Obama, you have meddled in Europe long enough. Now, mind your own business and try to salvage what is left of YOUR country.

If you love the Turks that much, I suggest you import them to America. Europe is infested with Islam already.

Anonymous xp Wed, Apr 08 2009 09:54 CET

NEVER NEVER NEVER ALLOW TURKEY INTO EU! I beg of you! It has the largest standing army, greater than any one in Europe!

I got insulted by a Turk and he said that Islam is going to takeover Europe. NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN OR YOU WILL PAY THE JISYA AND JANISSARY TAX AGAIN! Never let your sons and daughters fall under the shadow of Islam again!

In response to the comment regarding Turkey's location as a Middle East nation as a reason for not admitting it; perhaps you didn't realize that the United States is not in Europe. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a strategic defense organization .

Anonymous mary Mon, Apr 06 2009 22:23 CET

I agree with France. we have enough problems without admitting
Turkey as well.Moreover, there are
EU states who will not want anything remotely Ottoman, and it is a Moslem state - the Eu is
mainly Christian.

and indeed, Sarkozy made his views on Turkey's admission to the EU perfectly loud and clear when speaking at Sofia University; to the roar of agreement of the majority of students and others.

Anonymous mbkirova Mon, Apr 06 2009 08:40 CET

Shame to see Bulgarian racism in the way here, but I'd agree this move is not the US' call. I hope to see Turkey in the EU some day-- it has a great deal to offer. But not now-- way too many reforms needed, too many ethnic disputes mis-handled.
