Foreign tourists have spent an average of seven days in Bulgarian winter resorts, spending an average of 1335 leva each, the State Agency for Tourism said on April 3 2009.

Add to this the cost of the tourist packages purchased by foreigners in their native countries, which is an average of 843 leva, and the total spending foreigners did for their seven days in Bulgaria this winter was about  2178 leva, SAT head Anelia Kroushkova told reporters.

Foreigners who had no pre-arranged bookings paid an average of 1260 leva for their stay.

This, according to her, meant that Bulgaria was not longer a low-cost tourist destination.

British tourists were the one who spent the most she said: an average of 2600 leva a stay.

By comparison, Bulgarians preferred to spend not seven, but between two to five days in winter resorts. The average price paid by Bulgarian tourists for tourist packages was 370 leva a person. The additional spending was an average of 295 leva, Kroushkova said.

Those who arrived at resorts with no prior booking spent an average of 423 leva.

@diana; who did the survey? un-sourced numbers passing for statistics are worse than bad statistics

I absolutely agree with all comments. The Service Standards are very low. And yes the prices have to come down, because the tourists feed the winter economy in Bulgaria. And yes it is overbuild, Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo etc.

Just came back from Bansko. Next year I will spend my money in Austria, Italy or even Switzerland. Sorry to say this, but no value for money in BG... :-(

Bansko was very quite this Ski season, it's a pity.
Bansko had a terrific Snow Fall but in my humble opinion Bansko is being marketed wrong + too much accomiditation. The law of ''supply and demand'' has kicked in.

We have a chalet in Pamporovo. I
have offered friends a stay for free, but hardly anyone wants to
take up the offer.
I think Pamp is nice, but if prices are not kept down people will go elsewhere - the only reason
they come to Bulgaria in the first place is because it has been cheap. Service and management leave a lot to be desired. I wish
Bulgaria had never beeen admitted
to the EU, and then I would never
have purchased property there.

business not less. The resorts were quieter this year - but people
would rather give up their holiday
or go every other year to France, A
Austria or Italy or even Slovenia.

I agree with Andre, without tourism these resorts will end up as wilderness's.Too many shanty apartments finished to a third world standard, every Bulgarian sees tourists (especially Brits) as walking ATM machines. The last two winters we have been has seen a dramatic rise in prices while the standard has dropped. we fly over France,Italy,Switzerland & Austria which are no more expensive and a first class service. One other thing worth mentioning why is it that in spite of what the authorities tell us is double pricing still going on. Lift passes in Pamporo, tourist rate 50 leva per day [...]

Read the full comment Bulgarian rate 80 leva full season. We have a saying, never bite the hand that feeds you. These people have amputated it and made soup with the bones

We live now in Bulgaria, but we prefer to go out, because for example in Austria your pay and you get clean, organized service, good food with out logistic problem, here you go to Bansko or Borobitz and you stay hours by waiting, and if you visit some restaurant they ask for Kaparo ( such idiots) incredible country.
Visit Austria they have the best winter resorts and ist not more expensive.

I can confirm that out of 100 British people surveyed who holidayed in Bulgaria this year, 85% said they will NOT RETURN.

False economy statistics are worthless, government propaganda.
