Martin Petrov

Bulgarian international and Manchester City winger Martin Petrov is the subject of yet another flirt by north-London club Tottenham to boost their squad.

Tottenham, who had a dreadful start to the season but managed to get back to an even keel with the arrival of Harry Redknapp, is currently in 11th place in the Premiership, with 38 points and 10 points shy of sixth-placed Everton and potential European football for the following season.

The Spurs are aiming to attract  Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov and  Paraguay international centre back Paulo Cesar da Silva to White Hart Lane.

According to the Telegraph, the Bulgarian player is a priority target for the club as the Spurs are adamant on improving their ailing predicament on the left wing.

Cesar da Silva (29) is becoming a free agent at the end of the season and Tottenham would like to assure his services as well. The London club dispatched a scout to Paraguay’s recent World Cup qualifier with Ecuador, during which Silva turned in an impressive performance despite being giving his marching orders in the second half of the game.

Tottenham’s need for defensive cover is great as Ledley King’s persistent injury continues to limit the number of games he can play in quick succession.

Petrov was hotly tipped to join Spurs a while back when Dimitar Berbatov was still at the club, but seemingly the pull of Sven-Goran Eriksson,  and him flourishing at Man City, have had an effect on his decision to remain at City. Now that Berbatov is no longer at White Hart Lane, apparently there is a chance for Spurs to secure the services of yet another Bulgarian international.

Petrov was a first choice selection ever since he arrived in City, deployed on the left flank scoring his first goals for the club against Fulham where he netted a brace.

The 2008/09 season began well for him as well, with Martin finding form and goals in the UEFA Cup but it was not to last. A knee injury sustained while on international duty in October forced him out for at least four months, a big blow for both Manchester City and himself.

Tottenham chairman blames Ramos for Berbatov's exit

Daniel Levy, the Tottenham Hotspur chairman, is not a man who is particularly keen on total responsibility, especially in the case when financing a club has to be intertwined with team tactics and team selection. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, the long-standing chairman of Tottenham said he was not the man responsible for some of the most cataclysmic decisions that have occurred in the Spurs camp this past summer and over the last few months that have seen the club collapse to the bottom of the league. He said he never wanted to lose an asset of the calibre of the Bulgarian top hit man, Dimitar Berbatov, for instance.
