Six deaths, 100 injured in local elections violence in Turkey

BALLOT: Turkey's first lady Hayrunnisa Gul, accompanied by her husband president Abdullah Gul, casts her vote during municipal elections at a voting centre in a primary school in Ankara on March 29 2009.

Six people died and about 100 were injured as cities, towns and villages in Turkey went to the polls in local elections on March 29 2009.

The incidents took place in mainly ethnic Kurdish areas of eastern Turkey.

The fatalities came as supporters of rival candidates for the non-party position of village chief fought armed battles in several locations, Bulgarian news agency Focus quoted Turkish media reports as saying.

Turkey’s High Electoral Commission decided that "if, for some reason related with election procedure," the results of the March 29 local elections were invalidated in a municipality, village or residential quarter, the partial re-run of the local elections there would be held on June 7 2009, Turkey’s Zaman daily website said.

Close to 48 million people in 81 provinces in Turkey were eligible to vote for local authorities.
