Bulgaria will beat Ireland, football association head says

Hristo Stoichkov and Borislav Mihailov

Borislav Mihailov, the president of the Bulgarian Football Union, has expressed his confidence that Bulgaria will have no problem in disposing of Ireland in Dublin, because of the effective partnership of Stanimir Stoilov and Nasko Sirakov as manager and chief administrator of the national team.

"For the first time in a long time, I am confident before an international match. I am convinced that our players will perform to the top of their abilities. They will win the match. I haven't spoken to them yet but I will do so before the match," Mihailov said, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

"We've got a tremendous outfit now. We have full confidence in Nasko Sirakov and the rest of the coaching staff. There are no calculations here, just the desire to win. It is essential that we don't lose, so we can fight for the second place in the group.

"If we win this match, there is hope for greater things. A lot of the so called 'experts' declared Bulgaria as a favourite in the group at the time of the draw, and yet you all saw what happened. From here on end, every match will be like a final."

Bearing in mind Bulgaria's disappointing performances in the three draws so far in the World Cup qualifying cycle, Mihailov's words do come across a little strong. One thing is certain, Bulgaria will need to play their socks off, and they certainly will need some Irish luck in Dublin.
