Injured Berbatov out of key World Cup qualifiers

Bulgaria's national football team will play is crucial qualifiers against Ireland and Cyprus without captain Dimitar Berbatov after the Manchester United striker suffered an ankle injury in the 2-0 defeat to Fulham on March 21.

There was no chance Berbatov will feature in either match, the national team's head doctor Mihail Iliev told public broadcaster BNT. "Categorically not. The injury will prevent any kind of football-related activity for the next two weeks," he said.

"I have talked to the Manchester United medical staff and I am expecting a fax with the details of the medical scans.

"We are talking about a muscle tear, which means his foot will be immovable for two weeks. It is most likely that he aggravated his old ankle injury."

Berbatov appeared to suffer the injury with minutes left in the first half of the match against Fulham and was substituted at half time.

Bulgaria needs a win in Dublin to keep its qualifying chances alive, but Berbatov's absence robs Bulgaria manager Stanimir Stoilov of the squad's biggest goal threat. With Manchester City winger Martin Petrov also out through injury, Bulgaria will travel to Ireland without its two most explosive players.

Bulgaria has three points from three matches, compared to Ireland's 10 points from four games.
