Federer to play Murray after ousting Verdasco at Indian Wells

Fernando Verdasco

World number two in men's tennis Roger Federer claimed a two-set victory in the quarterfinal of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells against world number 10 Fernando Verdasco of Spain on March 20 2009.

Federer had no problems winning the first set, but met a stiffer resistance in the second, which almost cost him set. In the end, the Swiss took a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) win in an hour and a half to set up a semi-final date with Briton Andy Murray, the world number four.

Murray made it to the semifinals after winning 7-5 7-6 (8-6) against world number 74 Ivan Ljubicic on March 20 2009.

Federer won against Murray in the US Open final last year and the match promises to be extremely interesting especially since it is Murray who holds the lead in the face-to-face encounters with Federer.

"I'm aware he has beaten me more than I've beaten him but, on big occasions, I think I came through," Federer said after his match with Verdasco, as quoted by skysports.com.

"I have to build on that and make sure I play a tough and good match against him. Anything else is not going to do the job. He's a great player and great players are tough to play against. He's young, so you still have to figure him out a little bit. He's changing his game as time goes by. Every time you play him, he plays a bit different," he said.
