On March 15 2009, Bulgarian police protested in the centre of Sofia for fourth time in what became the largest protest so far.

Police protested over demands for a 50 per cent wage increase and improved working conditions.

Deputy chair of the Podkrepa union, Dimitar Manolov, claimed around 15 000 police gather for what had been called a cultural mass event. The Interior Ministry put the number of participants in the protests between 8 000 and 10 000.

Ivan Pavlov, head of a newly formed police union, said police protested because they want to be treated with a "European attitude" and against corruption in the Interior Ministry.

Around 30 policemen carried a coffin, symbolically burying the ministry, while organisers handed out red carnations.

The meeting in Zaimov park turned into a happening with music performances, a piper ensamble, folk dance and a chilren's choir.

Chronicle of a protest foretold

In an attempt to analyse the first day of the so-called national protest on January 14 2009, Bulgarian media, politicians, participants and onlookers alike seem to have come to one conclusion: intended as a peaceful rally, the protest was corrupted by outbursts of hooliganism that led to police brutality, and it was prematurely cut short by Sofia municipality.
