Plovdiv gears up for chaos on Saturday as police mobilise

Expats residing in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv should heed Plovdiv municipality's warning regarding the upcoming fixture between Botev Plovdiv and Levski Sofia on Saturday, March 14.

Parts of central Plovdiv will be cordoned off by riot police. In addition, from 8am until 6pm alcohol will not be sold anywhere around the football ground or areas in downtown Plovdiv, Dnevnik daily reports.

Boulevards Iztochen and Hristo Botev will be partially or completely closed for traffic.

Roads leading from Plovdiv train station towards the ground will also be partially closed or cordoned off.

More than 500 officers are being mobilised to ensure that hardcore elements from opposing "firms" Levski Sofia West and Botev Ultras will not stage running battles across the city. The area around the ground will be subject to constant CCTV surveillance.

Flares, knives, bombs, smoke bombs, and other "tools" are forbidden in the ground, and fans caught carrying any such offensive weapons will be expelled.

Plovdiv is gearing up for a 2000-strong Levski travelling contingent that will descend on the town early on Saturday morning.
