Three Bulgarian wines and two rakiyas won recognition at Vinalies Internationales 2009, held in Paris, France, from February 27 to March 3. Vinalies Internationales is an annual international wine and grape-alcohol competition started in 1993, organised by the Union des Œnologues de France. Bulgaria first participated in 2003.

Winning gold for Bulgaria in 2009 were Domaine Boyar's Rakia Solitaire 2007 and Domaine Boyar's Special Selection Rakia Solitaire 2008, with silvers going to Todoroff's Thracian Mystery Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Rumelia Wine Cellar's Merul Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 and Rumelia Wine Cellar's Merul Reserve Mavrud 2007.

Rakiya is a fruit-based spirit, typically made with grapes, traditional in the Balkans; it is similar to grappa or schnapps.

Bulgaria also won medals in 2007, 2006 and 2003; in 2003, it was again Todoroff that won – a silver medal.

In this year's contest, nearly 3500 wines and grape-based alcohols from around the world were submitted for consideration. The aim of the competition, according to the Vinalies Internationales website, is to encourage grape growers to improve the quality of their product, and, accordingly, the end result – in other words, wine and grape spirits.

Wines and alcohols are evaluated by a five- or seven-member blind jury of industry professionals, with each person giving a numerical ranking and written commentary of the drink.
