A march is taking place in Sofia today - March 8 - to support a Bulgarian woman who was the victim of a serious attack in the Greek capital of Athens just before Christmas.

Kostadinka Kuneva, the Chair of the federation of cleaners and maid-servants in the capital's Attica district, was attacked with acid, sustaining serious injuries and losing the sight of an eye. Her assailants have never been caught but the attack is thought to have been linked to her union activities.

The Sofia rally starts at Sofia University, culminating in front of the Greek Embassy. The show of support for Kuneva comes a fortnight after more than a thousand people gathered in downtown Athens to support Kuneva at the initiative of the Federation of Cleaners and Maid-servants in Attica. Protestors demanded that the perpetrators be arrested and brought to justice. They also called on all immigrants in Greece to unite and demand more scrupulous adherence to labour legislation from employers.

Greek trade unions have promised to undertake a thorough investigation into the case. They have also promised to settle all paper work regarding Kuneva's social securities and have pledged to support Kuneva's family.
