On March 6 at 8pm, BBC Two will show a documentary film featuring "green" activists from Bulgaria's Zeleni Balkani (Green Balkans), Dnevnik daily reported on March 4 2009.

Titled Iron Curtain, Ribbon of Life, the film is part of the series Natural World and was produced by British company Free Spirit Films.

Being a somewhat odd celebration of 20 years from the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 when the communism crumbled, the film travels through the territories of several countries who used to be withing the Iron Curtain realm, including Bulgaria.

According to the film's creators, the isolation of those countries finally led to a "last heaven" for many rare animals and plants. Biologist Kai Frobel takes the viewer through this strip of preserved wildlife, stretching some 13 000 km across Europe from the Baltic to Black seas.

The "ribbon of life," or Europe's Green Belt, also passes through Bulgaria. With the help of Green Balkans experts the team of Free Spirit Films visited Sakar and Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The footage presents the conservation of Imperial eagle and various vultures dwelling along the border area with Turkey.

The limited access to those areas in Bulgaria, keeping tourists at distance as well as the scarce settlements, has contributed to the preservation of remarkable natural heritage, with rich biological and landscape variety.
