Today's weather means that it is not a good day to be in the mountains

Low temperatures, clouds and winds have made conditions in mountains unsuitable for hiking and other recreation, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgaria Cross Organisation told Bulgarian news agency Focus on March 2 2009.

The MRS asked people not to make long trips in the mountains on March 2 because of the bad weather conditions.

Temperatures in the mountains varied between -2 and three degrees, which was not suitable for climbing or hiking. The passages and trails were covered by snow in most mountains and the danger of avalanches made it inadvisable for people to be on the mountain.

Skiers should be extremely careful when skiing outside the marked ski runs in Bansko winter resort in Pirin mountain, an area with high avalanche record.

The last victim there was 28-year-old Victor Garbev from Sofia, who went missing on January 28 2009 after an avalanche in the mountains above Bansko.

After more than 24 hours of searching for Garbev, rescue teams managed to locate his whereabouts - buried three metres under the snow.

He went missing after he ventured outside the marked areas of a ski run beneath Todorka peak, when the avalanche struck. He was snowboarding with a friend who was out of the avalanche's reach.

Reports said that his inexperience and his decision to go outside the marked areas cost him his life.
