Bulgaria in secret operation against contraband, tax fraud

Bulgarian anti-mafia and tax authorities spent several days on a secret operation cracking down on more than 40 warehouses and offices of importers of contraband Chinese and Turkish goods, mass-circulation daily 24 Chassa reported on February 28 2009.

The operation was carried out with the assistance of the European Anti-Fraud Office Olaf, the newspaper said.

The operation was intended to ascertain how the contraband, customs fraud and related value-added tax schemes worked, according to 24 Chassa.

Bulgarian news agency Focus said on February 26 2009 that Olaf currently investigating 44 EU funds embezzlement cases in Bulgaria, according to Olaf spokesperson Jorg Wojahn.

Most of the cases were in the field of agriculture.

Olaf was also inquiring into 88 suspicious cases, which could result in more investigations.

Wojahn said that Olaf had a number of experts working in Bulgaria engaged in different sectors.
