No Wembley repeat for Berbatov

Dimitar Berbatov has been denied a return to Wembley by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who left his Bulgarian striker out of the squad for the Carling Cup final on March 1, reports in Britain have claimed.

A year earlier, the Bulgarian scored the equaliser for Tottenham against Chelsea, helping Spurs win the trophy to grab only the second winners medal of his career.

Ferguson's decision means that the Bulgarian will avoid a reunion with his old club and spare his striker the gibes of the Tottenham fans, who were unimpressed with the reports that the Bulgarian refused to play for Tottenham at the start of the season, demanding he was sold to United.

According to the United manager, however, the decision to rest Berbatov was prompted by his desire to give a chance to some of the club's youth players.

"Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck will both play and deserve to play," Ferguson was quoted as saying. "Jonny Evans has hopefully recovered from Tuesday's match [against Inter Milan in the Champions League]. He was feeling his injury towards the end of the game."

The only other senior squad player left out by the Scot is goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
