Property purchases of 500 000 leva or above to be investigated

Bulgarian authorities will begin investigating all property purchases of 500 000 leva or more made over the past 12 months, European Affairs Minister Gergana Passi said after the Cabinet meeting on February 26, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

The inspection will be carried out by the State Agency for National Security (SANS), the Interior Ministry, the National Revenue Agency and the Prosecutor's Office.

"The assignment is a continuation of the task initiated last year, which aims to investigate politicians and businessmen," Pasi said. She did not disclose how many individuals have purchased property exceeding 500 000 leva over the past 12 months, but "should the strategy bear success, it could be expanded to cover more people and over a greater time frame".

Parliament approved on February 26 the temporary schedule with the measures which Bulgaria has to fulfill in accordance with the demands from the European Commission.

There are several controversial and divisive issues left to resolve, however, according to Passi. Parliament still has to decide on amendments to the Penal Code, the Conflict of Interest Act and the law for confiscation of property obtained from unlawful activity. Another highly disputed issue is the amendment of the law which asserts who can be investigated for embezzlement.
