Bulgaria remans top of the chart, with 18.8 per cent of all demand, followed by the US, Spain and Germany
Bulgarian prosecutors were investigating more cases of alleged embezzlement of European Union funds by companies linked to controversial businessmen Mario Nikolov and Lyudmil Stoykov.
Bulgarian businessman Mario Nikolov, the main defendant in an European Union funds embezzlement court case of great public interest, saw himself as a victim of a conspiracy organised by foreign competitors, Bulgarian-language Dnevnik daily said on December 12 2008. Nikolov, whose case is currently in court, told a news conference that the accusations against him were prompted by foreign competitors. A new task force will use European Union funds to fight embezzlement, Margarita Popova, spokesperson of the Prosecutor-General's Office, was quoted as saying by Bulgarian news agency BTA on October 3 2008. The unit will consist of representatives from the Sofia branch of the Prosecutor-General's Office, the National Investigative Service and the police, she said.
The Sofia District Court has sentenced Tramcar Sofia managing director Hristosko Vretenarov to two-and-a-half years in prison for embezzlement and gross misconduct. Vretenarov was accused of acquiring large sums of money from the "speed train" project for his own benefit.
The same day Bulgaria's national consultative council met to discuss the July 3 2008 explosions at the Chelopechene munitions dump, military prosecutors questioned a senior officer in connection with charges against him of embezzlement and abuse of office. Bulgarian National Television reported on July 17 that the charges arose from two cases, in 2005 and in 2007, of irregularities in the sales of about 250 tons of scrap metal from dismantled old munitions.
CSKA football club's former president Alexander Tomov and financial director Alexander Garibov are the targets of an investigation by Sofia city prosecution, a statement published on the website of the Prosecutor-General's Office on June 18 2008 reads. The investigation is over suspicions of embezzlement of about five million euro from CSKA and Kremikovtzi steelworks. Tomov used to be executive director of Kremikovtzi, the biggest Bulgarian steel maker, currently owned by Indian tycoon Pramod Mittal. The plant is facing a deep financial crisis, the same as CSKA, which is also owned by Mittal.
