Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims he will consider it "a complete failure if Arsenal don’t win the Champions League – because that’s how he feels after every defeat," as quoted saying by the club's official website.

Out of England's Big Four, Arsenal are the traditional weak link in Europe. They never quite matched Liverpool or Man United, or even Chelsea. Naturally, this is sticking like a sore thumb not only for the French manager but players and supporters alike.

Wenger has yet to add a European trophy to his CV and Arsenal's trophy collection, the closest being three years ago when Barcelona topped a 10-man Arsenal in Paris. In fact, the only thing Wenger has achieved in Europe, on a regular basis that is, is  leading the Gunners to  the Champions League group stage for 11 consecutive seasons. Impressive consistency, but it seems the North London club always runs out of steam in the knockout stages.

Except for that Paris final of course. Wenger was 13 minutes away from lifting the Big Ears  in 2006 and wants to make amends this season. A win against Roma on Tuesday night would keep the Frenchman on course – but a defeat would usher in the ‘F’ word.

"I feel every time I don't win something, it's a failure," said Wenger for the Arsenal website. "I am here to win and give my best every time."

The Gunners will entertain Roma in the first leg at the Emirates, something which Wenger would have wished to avoid. Skipper Kolo Toure will go toe to toe with Francesco Totti in a dramatic personal clash, but complications will arise from  the absence of  Andrey Arshavin.

The Russian is ineligible, having played for Zenit St Petersburg in the competition earlier this season. To complicate matter further, strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Eduardo are injured, as well as other long term casualties such as key players Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott.

With his potential firepower severely diminished,  Wenger's priority concern would be making sure  the Gunners don't concede an away goal against  Roma which could spell a disaster in the long term.

"The weight of the away goal is massive," he said. "It has become too important. When you draw 0-0 at home, the team you play away has absolutely to score, so they come at you," he said as quoted by the BBC
