The event marked the official launching of a national programme for assistance of the wine industry for 2009-2014. It is a joint effort by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the State Fund Agriculture. The programme would support Bulgarian vine-growers with a subsidy of up to 8040 leva a hectare, which ideally should cover up to 75 per cent of production costs.

Out of the total production, 80 per cent has been exported and as main markets for local wine have been identified Russia, Poland and Germany.

The agency has conducted 1650 tests and has issued 87 control numbers for the producing of new flavours. International wine testing is underway at the moment as a preparation for the upcoming Vinaria exhibition, which starts on March 13.

Being a part of the Plovdiv International Fair, Vinaria is the largest and most prestigious wine event in the region and brings together producers from more than 30 countries. The event also gathers over 20 000 professionals, merchants and connoisseurs.
