Defence Ministry's sales bonanza in Plovdiv

Mon, Feb 23 2009 10:36 CET 864 Views
The Defence Ministry, in an endeavour to balance its books,  has embarked on a selling spree in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv. Eight properties are up for sale, including one 17.6 ha in area, on 238 blvd Bulgaria, immediately in front of the new wing of Plovdiv Unviersity.

The development has been greeted with alarm by municipal engineer Todor Petkov who says that the sales contravene the institution's aspirations to build its own Internet and sports hall near the main university building. "Permission to sell former military parcels by Plovdiv University Paisii Hilendarski should be forbidden," said Petkov as quoted by Stroitelstvo Gradut.

"I read with astonishment that these procedures will be allowed to go ahead," he said. "I will try every legal mechanism to prevent the sale of property immediately next to the University, as this will only harm the educational environment for starters, and it will not ultimately resolve the army's financial problems," he added.

The 17.6ha parcel of land was put up for auction with initial price of 821 000 leva, starting March 26. Potential buyers will have to contribute  410 000 leva as a deposit for participation. Final applications for involvement will be accepted on March 19.

The remaining military properties auctioned for sale are four stores on Koprivkite st, the largest of which is 329 sq m, priced at 481 100 leva.
