Week of Greek films to be shown in Sofia

The Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Sofia, a Greek cultural centre, is hosting a week of Greek cinema from February 23 to 27 2009. The programme, entitled Sofia: A tribute to Greek cinema, features 10 contemporary Greek films, of which five are short films.

Projections start each evening at 6pm. The programme is as follows:

February 24

Nyfes (Brides), by Pantelis Voulgaris (2004, 135')
Prostasia (Protection), by Hristos Nikoleris (2005, 15')

February 25

Politiki kouzina (A Touch of Spice), by Tasos Boulmetis (2003, 108')
O gogos (The Hawker), by Panagiotis Fafoutis (2001, 13')

February 26

Liubi, by Laya Yourgou (2005, 96')
The Last Spring (Daybreak), by Yannis Katsamboulas (2003, 17')

February 27

Eduart, by Angeliki Antoniou (2006, 104')
Single String of Pearls, by Vasilis Kehagias (2006, 15')

Opened in Bulgaria in November 2008, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture has the goal of promoting Greek culture and the Greek language. It joins locations in Odessa, Alexandria, Berlin, London, Moscow, Vienna, Brussels, Washington and Beijing. Other Hellenic houses of culture are planned for Trieste, Belgrade, Bucharest and Tirana. The foundation offers lessons in the Greek language, organises cultural events, publishes books and has public libraries in its branches. The Sofia location is at 51 Benkovski Str.
