Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) wants to have the terms of a new gas supply contract with Gazpromexport clear by the end of May, BEH board member and Bulgargaz executive director Dimitar Gogov has told MPs.

Parliament's energy committee called Gogov for an update on the talks held with the Russian side during President Georgi Purvanov’s visit to Moscow earlier this month.

If BEH gets its wish, the signing of the contract would coincide with general and European Parliament elections in the country, which Gogov said was a coincidence, not a campaign ploy.

Negotiations could, however, drag on until the end of 2009, if not longer. Gogov said he would resign his job if Bulgaria did not have a new direct supply contract at the start of 2010.

Under the memorandum of cooperation in the gas industry signed in 2006, state-owned distributor Bulgargaz and privately-owned Overgas Inc, which buys gas from Gazprom and sells it to Bulgaria, should start talks on the gas volumes Bulgaria will be shipped after the current supply deal expires at the end of 2010.

Bulgaria now buys gas from Overgas Inc, Wintershall and Gazpromexport. Gazprom owns 50 per cent stakes in the first two companies, while the third is a fully-owned subsidiary.

Overgas Inc handles the bulk, about 70 per cent, of current deliveries, but Gogov said that Bulgaria could slash costs by buying more gas from Gazpromexport.
