A start to construction has been approved for two expansive solar panel installations in the town of Dupnitsa, mayor Atanas Yanev said, as quoted by the Bulgarian news agency BTA on February 13 2009. The investment will exceed 400 million euro, which is, in its own right, the largest such investment for such infrastructure in Bulgaria.

The first solar panel central will be built over a large parcel of land that was part of a former military base in the village of Krainitsi, covering a total of 1294 ha. The terrain was allotted from the Ministry of Agriculture, following its exchange in barter deals with four other municipal plots.

The first installation will have a capacity of 90 megawatts and the second one will be 50 megawatts. The smaller installation will be constructed in the souther outskirts of Doupnitsa.

Both solar panel installations are to start outputting enery by the beginning of 2010. The project is vital for the local economy, not only because it is a major step forward in energy diversification, but also because it will create more than 100 workplaces in the local economy.

I wonder how much Atanas Yanev made on this, and how many other people have their fingers in this pie.
