The council of the ruling coalition will meet on the afternoon of February 13 2009, where the main topics of discussion will be pertaining the forthcoming dual parliamentary and European elections. Further on the agenda will be the country's mid-term report from the European Commission, and the Government's plan for managing the economic crisis.

The leaders of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the Turkish-lead Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) and the National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP), Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, Ahmed Dogan and Simeon Saxe-Coburg, respectively, will discuss the criticisms addressed from Brussels in the intermediate report regarding the progress the Bulgarian Government has made in combating institutionalised corruption, organised crime and improvement of the vexed judiciary system. They will also discuss the degree to which the future European funds arriving in Bulgarian can be managed by the Government.

The main argument among the ruling coalition is whether to stage both elections at the same date. NMSP is in strong support of the idea, whereas BSP was polarised about it, with strong opinions being expressed towards both options. Currently however, BSP is keener on having separate elections. MRF, meanwhile, is adamantly against simultaneous elections.

The coalition council will also evaluate the plan for managing the economic crisis in the country. NMSP has gone a step further by demanding that clear, coherent and concrete concepts are put forward by the Government forthwith. The party insists that the nation has to reach a pre-election agreement with the International Monetary Fund, to submit the documentation for entering the eurozone and for measures to be taken for faster recovery of value added tax (VAT).
