Nadal pushed to the limit by Dimitrov in Rotterdam

Bulgaria's young tennis star Grigor Dimitrov won the respect of world number one Rafael Nadal after making him earn his victory in their match on February 12 2009 at Rotterdam.

It was the first clash between the two players, who had previously only trained together. The meeting took place in the second round of the 36th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.

Dimitrov made everything possible to prove that his successes in the boy's singles last year, when he won Wimbledon and the US Open, were not just lucky outcomes.

The first set was a thrilling experience, with Nadal pushing hard against the 17-year-old Dimitrov, who lost it in the tie break.

The second set was even more interesting with Dimitrov, world number 478, winning it 6-3, only to lose the third 6-2 after losing two breakpoints against Nadal. The final score came to 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

At the end, after two hours and 26 minutes on the court, the crowd of 8000 applauded both players for their good show.

"He will certainly be a great player and for sure reach the top 10," Nadal said after the match as quoted on the tournament's website. Reminiscing about his first match against a top seeded player, he said: "I remember playing Roger Federer in Miami in 2004 and I was only enjoying the moments. I felt no pressure."

That was the first time Nadal defeated Federer.
