With the arrival of 423 new rubbish bins on February 11 2009, Plovdiv has made clear its will to never fall into a situation in which Sofia finds itself – a city whose cleanliness depends on contracted collection companies.

Plovdiv city hall said in a press release that deputy mayor Petko Atanassov and manager of the firm Chistota, Radoslav Koshinski, had overseen the transfer of the new Meva-brand waste containers, which are now property of the city. With the bins being property of Plovdiv, the city was "demonstrating its rights" to have a clean urban area, Atanassov said.

"At the moment, Sofia is again facing a rubbish crisis, as the firms that are responsible for assuring the cleanliness of five capital city boroughs, where more than 600 000 live, could tomorrow take back their rubbish containers. And people would simply have no where to throw their waste," he said. "Our goal was to avoid such a situation and in no way to relegate the municipality and the residents of Plovdiv to be in debt to some cleaning company."

Atanassov also mentioned that Plovdiv had held two tenders for the rubbish bins and that they had resulted in competitive offers.

A large part of the bins will be designated for Plovdiv's historic Old Town, as they are suitable in size. The city is also awaiting the delivery of dumpsters – more than 3000.

Koshinski said that he had supported the city in its deciding to own the rubbish containers.
