Bulgarian Socialist Party does not expect criticism from Brussels

Wed, Feb 11 2009 10:38 CET 913 Views

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) believes that the European Commission will not be critical in its report on Bulgaria, according to BSP spokeswoman Kornelia Ninova, after a meeting of the party's executive bureau on February 10, as reported by Dnevnik daily.

"The report will concentrate on the positive progress and development Bulgaria has demonstrated in recent months, and it will stimulate the government to aim for even greater achievements in the future," she said.

The report will be presented on Thursday. The government's measures, designed to combat the economic crisis, will be discussed at a plenary session of the ruling coalition's political council on Friday, February 13.

According to Ninova, the opposition's stance is not designed to address the problems of the people but stems from personal motives. "This is happening at a time when the nation should be united," she said. "Realistic and active measures have already been undertaken by the government to help prop up the economy and combat financial stagnation."

"The funds released from the Bulgarian National Bank for the development of small and medium sized businesses, the preparation of financial assistance for advanced major infrastructural projects; the 1.2 billion leva allocated for agriculture subsidies — all indicate how much the BSP and the government are doing to help the country in this dire situation," she said.
