Plovdiv International Airport will be able to boast brand-new infrastructure, complete with a new terminal, by September 1 2009, the executive director of Plovdiv Airport EAD, Andreya Andreev, said, as quoted by Stroitelstvo Gradut.

The company that won the contract on February 6 2009 was the Plovdiv-based firm Koev. It accepted the task of building the airport in 90 days for a total cost of 13.6 million leva. This was a 3.6 million rise over initial calculations, which had pegged the construction at 10 million leva a short time ago, December 12 2008.

The technical project and blueprints for the new terminal are ready and construction is expected to commence within a fortnight. The new terminal will be 200m south-west of the old terminal. Arkont-A, with chief architect Ilko Nikolov, created the design for the facility.

The building will be 6750 sq m in total, accommodating a large public hall, restaurants, fast food outlets, shops, air-carrier offices, tour-operator offices, rent-a-car, boutiques and mroe. It will be a large, modern construction with a glass exterior, equipped with a modern system for personnel service and procession worth 3.6 million leva. As part of the programme for the modernisation of the airport undertaken by civilian air traffic agency of the Transport Ministry, the existing terminal is to be expanded in size and capacity, which will co-incide with the thorough re-construction and re-installation of its electric supply and lighting systems, as well as the installation of a new water-supply network.

In total, the complete project soared from 21 million leva, which was the estimate as of December 12, to 36 million leva as of February 8.

Apart from the new terminal, the infrastructure around the entire airport is underway. Estimated at 18 million leva, on February 9, LOG Siberia commenced the construction of a 20-kilovolt electric circuit and lighting system around the entire airport. Meanwhile, the water supply and sanitation system refurbishment and installation will be tasked to Dragiev & Co Plovdiv.

The total cost of these three projects is 21 million leva. A Government grant of five million leva was allocated for the initial stage, which began at the end of December 2008. The deadline for all work – including the new terminal – to be completed is June 2009.

Brilliant news.
All we need now are regular direct flights from London, preferably London Gatwick, to Plovdiv. Are there any plans?
