Firm stance against European Parliament resolution backing recognition of Kosovo independence

Serbia says resolution violates international law

In the approach to the first anniversary of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence on February 17 2008, the European Parliament adopted, by a large majority, a resolution calling on those EU countries that had not recognised Kosovo to do so.

But before and after the European Parliament resolution was approved, EU member states Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain held firm that they would not reverse their firmly-held positions rejecting Kosovo's breakaway from Serbia.

Serbia, not an EU member state, was swift to condemn the European Parliament resolution.

In a statement to Serbia's Tanjug news agency, Serbian foreign minister Vuk Jeremic said that the resolution was unconstitutional and was against international law. Jeremic said that the European Parliament was not an institution authorised by the EU to deal with foreign policy issues.

"The Council of Ministers deals with foreign policy on behalf of the EU and, within the Council, there are countries that recognise Kosovo as an independent state and others that do not. Therefore, the EU is divided within the institution that is legally tasked with this issue," Jeremic told Tanjug.

The resolution welcomes the deployment of the EU rule-of-law mission, EULEX, throughout the territory of Kosovo.

It asks the EU Special Representative in Kosovo to ensure that the Kosovo government promotes the participation of Kosovo Serbs in the political, economic and social life of Kosovo, including by means of specific economic development measures for the Mitrovica region.

The European Parliament resolution emphasises the need for a multi-ethnic police force in all areas of Kosovo.

The European Parliament also urged Kosovo authorities to support the reintegration of
the Serb police officers who have yet to return.

The resolution was proposed by the European Parliament's Kosovo rapporteur and Dutch MP, Joost Lagendijk, and adopted with 424 votes in favor and 133 against.

Bush's decision to recognize Kosovo's independence will probably go down in history as his most dangerous precedent. We have the president of the United States calling for the break up of a sovereign state against its will. The Americans soon saw the dangerous consequences of their precedent when Russia decided to help the Abkhazis and the South Ossetians in the US-allied Republic of Georgia break away and set up their own autonomus entities, without the Georgian govt's permission. Shame on Bush for establishing this most dangerous precedent, which flies in the face of international law. Written by an American currently [...]

Who are you to talk about democracy. Why dont you look around how immigrants and national minorities are treated in England. Its sad how minds of many were brainwashed by propaganda. In former Yugoslavia all nationalities enjoyed the freedom to worship and express their religion. It was in interest of many western axis countries for Yugoslavia to dissolve. Its unfortunate that England, France, and USA also wanted Yugoslavia to break up. Possibly of strategic NATO bases that are now created in Bosnia and Kosovo right off the Adriatic coast, possibly aimed against Russia. How can you call Serbs fascists when [...]

Read the full comment Serbs defended Europe from Ottomans for many years. Serbia was on the side of the allies during WWI and WWII. 1/4 of Serbian population was killed during WWI, and 1,400,000 during WWII. Albanians, Croatians, as well as Bosnian Muslims were siding with Nazi Germany where they killed millions of Serbs and Jews.(look up Jasenovac concentration camp) Stupid Serbs again believed they can live together with these nationalities in peace as Brotherhood and Unity. In recent Balkan wars Serbs only defended the lands that were inhibited for years by Serbs, and by Serbian majority. Serbs didn't want history of WWII to repeat once again. In this war more then 500 000 Serbs were expelled from Croatia where Serbs formed the majority of the former Croatian republic Srpska Krajna. The borders of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and other former Yugoslav countries were drawn during Titos role as to have equal governing democracy between republics in order to satisfy all nationalities of former Yugoslavia. As a result Serbs lost a lot of territory. The goal was to weaken Serbia as to make it have less power. Tito also created Kosovo and Vojvodina as two Serbian provinces. Unfortunately this redrawing of borders within former Yugoslavia made Serbs displaced all over former Yugoslav republics. And now when Serbs want to unite, they are aggressors, how are you an aggressor on your own territory that was taken away from you?

And more to the point... it was slobodan milosovic who took it upon himself to decide that within what was Yugoslavia... it was a specific group (serbs) who were to enjoy democracy... other yugoslav citizens were to be sh** out of luck.

Seeing How Kosovo is the SEVENTH country to be formed out of what was yugoslavia.... the ancient [...]
