Two million leva to revamp Boris III Boulevard

Thu, Feb 05 2009 10:31 CET 650 Views

One million leva will be allocated from Sofia Municipality and another million from the National Agency for Roads and Infrastructure (NARI) for the reconstruction of one of the oldest boulevards in Sofia, Boris III, which runs from Ruski Pametnik in the centre of Sofia to Kniazhevo, in the outskirts of Vitosha Mountain.

The boulevard will be refurbished piecemeal, so as not to stop traffic completely. The executive director of NARI,  Yanko Yankov, and the deputy mayor of Sofia transport, Alexander Tsvetkov, met late on February 4 to discuss how the two million leva will be spent and how the gradual process of reconstruction will be implemented so that it causes minimum inconvenience.

Following their meeting, both institutions agreed to split tasks and responsibilities. The segment from the Sofia Circular Road from tram stop Shipka E97 is designated as sector 1, and from Shipka to Ruski pametnik as sector 2.  Shipka stop is the divide between the two companies, reports Investor.bg. It is as yet unknown which institution will be allocated which section north and south of Shipka.

The long overdue reconstruction has come after increasing complaints from people about the abysmal  state of the boulevard. Only a day before the agreement, the Municipality and the State were blaming each other and arguing over who should foot the bill.

Accordingly, the Sofia Municipality were the first to "apologise" for the state of one the most iconic and oldest boulevards in Sofia. They claimed that the boulevard is government property and that no funds were alloted from NARI to have it repaired.

In turn, NARI claimed that under the protocol enacted by Sofia mayor Boiko Borisov in October 2008, Boris III Boulevard is no longer government property but falls under Sofia Municipality.
