Bulgaria's border police has received information that the main Bulgarian-Greek border checkpoint at Koulata-Promahon will not be open for traffic until February 4 2009 because of ongoing protests by Greek farmers.

The border checkpoint was opened for 90 minutes on February 2 2009 from 10am when all vehicles waiting on both sides of the border were let through. After that, access to the checkpoint from the Greek side was again blocked by Greek farmers' vehicles.

Border police urged travellers to use the other two border checkpoints on the Bulgarian border with Greece, the Ilinden-Exohi and Kapitan Petko-Ormenion, which are working normally.

Greek farmers have been staging road blockades on major Greek roads, including those leading to Bulgaria, for close to two weeks, demanding more funding from their government.
