Patriarch Kirill is the new head of the Russian Orthodox Church after he was enthroned during a special ceremony on February 1 2009 in Moscow, Reuters news agency reported.

The ceremony took place in the Christ the Savior Cathedral in front of close to 4000 ordinary citizens and dignitaries, among which were Russia’s prime minister Vladimir Putin and president Dmitrii Medvedev.

Kirill was crowned as the 16th patriarch of all Russia and will be responsible for the spiritual guidance of about 160 million followers.
Often regarded as a leader with a modern vision, the 62-year-old patriarch has previously said that the church needed to gain more independence from the governmental supervision and has encouraged stronger ties with foreign churches.

After the fall of communism in the late 1980s, the Russian church gradually restored its influence, while maintaining friendly relationship with the Kremlin. This, however, was attributed to the efforts of Kirill’s predecessor, Aleksii II, who had a reputation of a conservative leader.

Born Vladimir Mihailovich Goundyaev, Kirill was the former head of the church’s external relations department.
