At the beginning of January 2009, Sandanski mayor Anton Totev signed a contract with the Environment Ministry in which plans were approved and the go-ahead was given for the waste management depot in Sandanski to be expanded and to have its processing capacity increased.
This was reported by Stroitelstvo Gradut in its January 26 edition.
Technical assistance for gathering financial resources for the project has been designated as a paramount priority under the operative programme Environment 2007 - 2013. The project, so far, has been evaluated at 485 600 leva; it has to be completed by the end of 2009.
The plant will be able to manage and process the waste of Sandanski and the surrounding region, plus the two adjacent municipalities of Stroumyani and Kresna. The initial facility in Sandanski was constructed by Glavbolgarstroy in 2000/01. Currently, the Sandanski plant consists of the plant core, drainage systems, security moats, pumping stations, waste collectors, external and internal water supply networks, waste disposal facilities, administrative buildings and offices, a command centre, and 5800 metres of roadworks around the facility.
After years of wrangling between the national government and Sofia Municipality as to who exactly owns Boris III Boulevard, and who is responsible for its dilapidated state, an agreement is reached.
In light of economic stagnation, initial calculations by Litos Ibuilt have to be re-worked, so putting the current project on hold.
Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes.
