Federer books place in Australian Open final by crashing Roddick, waits for Nadal

Three-times Australian Open champion Roger Federer booked his place in this year's tournament final with a win against America's best player, Andy Roddick, on January 29 2009.

World number two Federer needed 126 minuted to wrap his three-set win against world number nine and seventh seed Roddick on the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

The match started well for the Swiss former world number one, who easily won the first set 6-2. This was when Roddick started showing that he was not going to be just another sparring partner for Federer, as was the case with Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, who lost to Federer in the quarterfinal 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.

Unfortunately for Roddick, who prior to the match held a 2-15 record against Federer, his efforts did not amount to much and he lost the second and third sets by the same scoreline, 7-5, to give Federer a 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 win.

Now all that Federer has to do is to wait for the January 30 semi-final clash between two Spaniards - world number one Rafael Nadal and the surprise of the tournament Fernando Verdasco, world number 15, who crashed Britain's Andy Murray and last year's finalist Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in back-to-back matches. Nadal is yet to drop a single set in the tournament.
