The world's top-ranked male tennis player Rafael Nadal will play against Belgium's Christophe Rochus, ranked 75th in the ATP standings, in the first round of the Australian Open that starts on January 19 2009.

The drawing ceremony held on January 16 2009 sent world number two Roger Federer to play Italy's Andreas Seppi, ranked 34th.

Home favourite Lleyton Hewitt will start against Chile's Fernando Gonzales, and world number four, Britain's Andy Murray, will play against Romanian Andrei Pavel. Last year's finalist, France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, raked sixth in the ATP ranking, will meet Argentina's Juan Monaco.

Andy Roddick from the US will play a qualifier, the same as the defending champion from Serbia, Novak Djokovic, currently ranked third in the ATP ranking. Russia's Marat Safin will meet Spain's Ivan Navarro.

Bulgaria's young tennis star Grigor Dimitrov, who won the junior titles at Wimbledon and US Open last year, will not take part in Australian Open.
