A UK citizen, who has been sentence by a UK court for fraud involving antiques, was arrested on January 6 2009 in the Black Sea city of Varna, Varna Regional Court said on January 9 2009.

The 48-year old British citizen had a European arrest warrant issued against him signed by a judge from London's City of Westminster Magistrates Court. He was arrested by Varna police officers in the village of Botevo in the Varna area where he has been living with his girlfriend for the past two years.

The warrant demanded the arrest of the UK national and his extradition to the UK based on a sentence issued against him by a regional court in Ipswich in 2006.

He was found guilty of participating in an antiques fraud in the period between August and November 2002. He was ordered to pay 1873 870 British pounds or face seven years' imprisonment.

Varna Regional Court is yet to discuss whether the British citizen would be extradited to the UK in the next seven days. If he appeals against his arrest he might appear before Varna Appellative Court on January 13 2009.
