All major streets, boulevards, intersections and squares in Sofia have been cleared of snow since midnight last night and will be cleaned by noon today, Dnevnik daily reports. Streets in the outlying villages of Lozen, Kokaliane, German, Pancharevo, Vladaia and Bankya are also being cleared, although most inner-borough streets in Sofia will not be cleaned by the municipality.
The Municipality of Sofia reminds residents that it is ultimately their responsibility to clear snow and ice from pavements immediately in front of their shops or property. Failure to do so will result in fines ranging from 20 leva up to 500 leva.
The south section of the Sofia Circular Road has been cleared, as well as the section from Dragalevtzi to Lozen, and from Bankia up until the Zlatnite Mostove on Vitosha Mountain.
A fleet of 1150 vehicles was mobilised and deployed throughout the night to deal with the accumulated snow blanket from the heavy snowfall in Sofia on January 8. Motorways are being cleared, although visibility is down to 50m in areas around Koznitsa, Kubrat and Levski, and 100m around Svishtov and Polski Trumbesh.
The National Agency of Road Infrastructure, as well as the emergency rescue services, warn that all vehicles must be equipped with winter tyres and chains must be available in the boot especially if people attempt driving through mountain passes such as Petrohan or Shipka. They warn drivers to be cautious, to drive sensibly and to avoid unnecessary trips, especially if their vehicles aren't properly equipped for winter conditions.
Seven arrested, including ‘The Squirrel’ who was found in possession of 10 00 euro, Interior Ministry says. Mobile phones, computer equipment and drug paraphernalia seized.
The first tremor was at about 12.34am, followed by another three minutes later. Their epicentres were located between the towns of Radnevo and Topolovgrad.
