Bulgaria has issued a total of 650 000 visas to foreign nationals in 2008, which was 18 per cent more compared to 2007, Bulgarian-language news agency Focus quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Milen Keremedchiev on December 30 2008.
Nationals of Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey accounted fro 70 per cent of the issued visas, Keremedchiev said.
In total, Russians were the biggest part of foreigners issued with Bulgarian visas in 2008 with 245 000 visas issued, he noted. This was 20 per cent more than in 2007.
In November this year, the ministry has registered a decline in the number of issued visas to Russian nationals which could be attributed to the complaints several Russian tour operators had against the Bulgarian embassy in Moscow and its procedures for issuing visas.
By March 15 2009, all Russian tour operators will be able to file directly visa applications to all Bulgarian consulates in Russia not just in Moscow Keremedchiev said which would ease the procedure. By the same date, the new visa centre of Bulgarian embassy in Moscow is suppose to start work which would also speed up the procedure, he said.
Now, according to Keremedchiev all these problems and complaints have been sorted out. According to him the effect of the global financial crisis will cause a downfall in the number of issued tourist visas in Bulgaria in 2009.
