All intercity road are accessable under normal winter conditions, the National Agency Road Infrastructure said. Temperatures in different parts of the country are said to vary from -18 degrees to 1 degree Celsius with temperatures in Musala reaching -20. Average highs for the country are expected to be between 2 and 4 degrees.
The weather is clear and windy, with scatterred clouds in Yambol, Montana, Turgovishte, Silistra and Pernik. Visibility in the morning of December 25 and throughout the day is expected to be good. Towards the late afternoon clouds will cover most of Western Bulgaria and it is likely to snow again. The weather in Greece and the southern Balkans will be sunny and warm according to weather.com.
In the valleys and lowers parts of Bulgaria the roads have been cleared and are currently reported to be dry. In the mountains however, above 1600 m elevation, roads are covered in snow and ice and the road services are currently working to have them cleared or covered with sand.
The traffic police has warned that all lorries must travel with snowchains and without carriages in the section Batak - Dospat, and through the Shipa Pass and Petrohan.
Danger from falling rocks and landslides have been detected around Iskarsko and Kresnersko Defile, Sofia-Samokov, Mezdra-Botevgrad, Assenovgrad-Smolyan, Yugovo-Luky, Krichim-Devin and around Koznica. All danger zones have been marked by emergency services and work is underway, Focus news agency reported.
Inside Sofia however, there is danger in the smaller streets inside different boroughs. Most of the streets there are covered in snow and ice. Drivers are advised, when driving in the backstreets of Sofia to apply extreme caution. The same is applicable for most of the pavements in Sofia and most other towns across Bulgaria. Pedestrians are advised to be careful and have appropriate footwear.
In the mountains, strong, at times stormy winds will be predominant in most ski resorts. Most mountains have an average temperature of -17C but it is likely to drop even further. Mountain Rescue Patrols and Ski Rescue Patrols warn that the conditions are dangerous for mountain climbing and tourism. The gondola in Botovets is likely to be closed because of the strong winds. On Vitosha mountain, only the covered lift from Simeonovo to Aleko Lodge works. The Romanski lift up to the summit of Cherni Vrach does not work, because of the strong winds.
Opposition parties and environmental protection NGOs argued that this and other provisions were the result of lobbyist pressure from ski resort operators.
Ferry-boat service between the Bulgarian and Romanian banks of the river may continue if the ferry captains decide that the weather conditions allow the safe passage of the boats.
