Macedonia will not be able to start European Union accession talks without a settlement of the name row with Greece, the Czech Deputy Prime Minister, Alexandr Vondra, whose country is taking over the EU Presidency on January 1, said in Brussels.
"I am afraid the chances of progress without resolution of the name issue, are slim," Vondra said on Tuesday.
"The Czech Republic changed its name three times in four years in the early 1990s but that made no impact on our identity or international position," Vondra added, Makfax news agency reported.
Despite MacedoniaÕs hopes that the country could receive a date for the start of accession talks once it met the European Commission criteria and wrapped up March 2009 presidential and local elections, a similar message came recently from France, too, the current holder of the EU presidency.
