Sofia municipality has made it a priority to install street lamps where there aren't any, to fix those that aren't working and have the Studentski Grad borough (Student Town) well and thoroughly lit up to facilitate surveillance and reduce the dangers of risk areas, Interior Minister Mihail Mikov said after a meeting with municipal leaders from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) on December 23.
The budget required for the operation would be approved within a week, mediapool.bg said. Mikov and BSP representatives discussed how to cooperate in maintaining effective, round the clock surveillance of the entire borough with CCTV surveilance.
Setting up a surveillance centre which would be link to central police precincts has been discussed, mediapool.bg said.
Municipal adviser Zhelio Boichev said that during his meeting with Mikov, he had assumed the responsibility to permanently stamp out crime and disorder in Studentski Grad and to create a safe zone through the use of video surveillance.
Mikov also underlined the fact that working conditions, equipment and facilities of the police need to be improved.
More than 30 "illegal ventures" in Studentski Grad have been ordered to close and are pending demolition after the latest investigation from the Sofia Directorate for Construction Control. Discussions for the renovation of the campus will be initiated on April 15-20
Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes.
