A joint Bulgarian-German project will see the construction of a modern Uefa-standard football stadium in the town of Mezdra, 60km north-east of Sofia, which will be used by the local club Lokomotiv Mezdra, weekly Stroitelstvo Gradut reported on December 8. The Bulgarian side are A2D Architecture and Design&Development firms, with chief architects Marin Georgiev, Boryana Kitova and Ivo Djoinov. Johan Ziegler from the Stuttgart architect bureau for sports infrastructure and chief architect Stefan Vaal will be at the helm of the German team.

The new ground will be build in a green zone, surrounded from the north by the Iskar river and from the south by a thick forest.  The entire complex will be designed to allow for all sorts of recreation, thus multi functional facilities for basketball, volleyball, skateboard, and others will be created. The facility will have a capacity of 17 488 seats, with a total of 20 000 during concerts, encompassing a total area of 7140 sq m.

Outside of the south stand, a large open-area will allow for the building of a big parking lot for 460 cars and 6 coaches, and it will have space for small shops, stalls and other facilities for prospective vendors. On the opposite side within the stand itself, offices, stores and other facilities will be incorporated withing the structure of the ground. The press centres, VIP sections, dressing rooms and the "business reception hall" will be located in the main stand of the ground. West of the main stand will be located the police headquarters from where the officers will be equipped with facilities for observation and ground control.

It will be a Category 2 Uefa football ground, which with the assistance of Nadin EOOD - the sponsor of Lokomotiv Mezdra - will be build to facilitate the needs of the club and stimulate the development of football and other sports in the region. The ground will have a modern scoreboard, it will be equipped with floodlights allowing for late kickoff, and modern platforms for TV crews and cameras. The total cost of the project is as of yet undisclosed by the Bulgarian and German officials, Stroitelstvo Gradut said.
