Judo and sambo. What more could a resident of Sofia want? On December 5, Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov and State Agency for Youth and Sport head Vessela Lecheva are opening a renovated and fully outfitted hall for such sports at the Ilinden-Sofia sport club.
Funding came from Sofia municipality and the State Agency for Youth and Sport. Sambo, an acronym for the Russian of "self-defence without weapons", is a form of martial art that was developed in the Soviet Union in the early 20th century.
Ilinden-Sofia sport club is at 45 Slivnitsa Blvd in the Ilinden quarter of Sofia.
Later in the day, Borissov will be heading over to the Chelopechene quarter in the Kremikovtsi borough of Sofia, where he will participate in the soil-turning ceremony of a new sporting centre.
The facility, which is to have seating for 200 people, is being constructed in the field of an area school. It will be used as a regional sport centre for Kremikovtsi. The Sofia municipality privatisation fund is giving three million leva to the project, city hall wrote in a December 4 2008 press release.
After the ground-breaking ceremony, Borissov will continue on his tour of construction sites, going next to a new kindergarten in Chelopechene, which is to have space for two groups of 30 children each. Following, he will open a new playground, with Kremikovtsi borough mayor Ivailo Panev also in attendance.
