Politics
- Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, re-elected leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) at the weekend, will re-affirm the status quo in the party with his choice of a new executive bureau, changing its line-up only to include two or three new faces, Dnevnik daily said, quoting high-ranking socialists. They said Stanishev would not make sharp changes to the BSP "in the name of party unity" before the 2009 parliamentary elections.
Social
- Bulgaria's Cabinet and business did not meet in their forecasts on Bulgaria's economy during 2009, Sega daily said, reporting that the Bulgarian Industrial Association said it expected the unemployment to reach a two-digit figure at the end of 2009. The Labour and Social Policy Ministry, however, still looks into the future with optimism despite the wave of lay-offs that is starting to grip the country, the daily said. The ministry expects unemployment in 2009 to reach a maximum of seven per cent.
- Ten people were breaking an arm or a leg each hour in Bulgaria as a result of the thawing ice, Monitor daily reported, saying teams in emergency rooms throughout the country have reported of a record-breaking number of injuries.
Economy
- The global financial crisis has made regional tourism a priority, Dnevnik daily said, reporting on the forecast of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation for 2009. It said the financial crisis would make tourists choose to spend their holidays at destinations close at hand and for shorter periods of time.
- Prices of laptops, cameras, plasma display and LCD TVs are likely to rise by 10 to 15 per cent, Standart daily quoted analysts as saying. The price hike comes on the back of a stronger yen, which has risen 12 per cent versus the US dollar, which coincided with the US currency recovering ground against the euro.
Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes.
