Volen Siderov, leader of ultra-nationalist Ataka party, and his wife Kapka Siderova were found not guilty by a panel of Sofia City Court on charges of perjury and pressuring a witness to commit the same. The court ruled on October 20 2008 that there was no proof against Siderov and his wife, news agencies reported..

Siderov was accused by the prosecution of giving false testimonies in relation to an incident that happened on April 7 2006 on Trakia Highway. On that day, the vehicle Siderov was driving, collided with a vehicle driven by 22-years-old Yavor Dakov, who claimed that he was assaulted after a quarrel with Siderov and Ataka member of Parliament Pavel Chernev.

Dakov's ill grandfather was also assaulted and Siderov allegedly waved a gun at Dakov. Afterwards, Siderov claimed the incident was an attempt on his life. Police said later that Siderov and Chernev's testimonies about the incident changed substantially over time.

Several weeks after the incident, Chernev left Ataka and said that he was asked by Siderov to lie to the police, which launched a probe against Ataka's leader.

The case has been postponed several times mainly because of the constant absence of Siderov's lawyers.

Supporters of ultra-nationalist Ataka party have also applied pressure on Sofia City Court to postpone the hearing against Siderov and his wife.

On May 26 2008, the court was forced to postponed the hearing again after a couple of hundred of Ataka supporters organised a loud protest outside the Palace of Justice in Sofia, where Siderov and his wife were about to face the court.

Protesters even blocked one of the entrances to the building. Siderov has always claimed that he was innocent an that he was a victim of a political mafia, blaming former interior minister Roumen Petkov for it.
