Census of birds and a bike rally to celebrate the European Days of Birds 2008

A census of Bulgaria's bird population will be taken on The European Days of the Birds in October. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) will mark the fourteenth event by inviting Bulgarians to join the count on October 4 and October 5  2008.

Everybody is welcome to take part in the census, and to choose where to count the birds: in the nearest garden or park, on their favourite mountain, or as part of groups organised by BSPB.

You could even count birds from the window while travelling in a car or a bus, BSPB said. Participants have to write down the time and place they took the census and note all the species they recognise. They should send the results, along with their name, age and occupation, to: varna@bspb.org, svishtov@bspb.org, plovdiv@bspb.org, haskovo@bspb.org or bspb_hq@bspb.org.

There will also be a bike rally in Bourgas on October 4 starting at 10am at Ohlyuva place in the city centre. Cyclists will take a seaside route, along the old road, to Sarafovo.

Cycling is a wonderful way to observe birds, as it is such a quiet way to travel, BSPB said, and you can stop at any time to observe birds with binoculars or take photos of them. The rally is also part of the Bourgas campaign for safe cycling and bicycle lanes in the city.

Another event on Sunday, October 5 is an open doors day at the Poda nature protection centre in Bourgas, where people usually go to watch birds and learn more about the protection programme for rare species in the area. Poda will open at 11am on the day.
