Bad drivers to work in emergency wards

Drivers who cause road accidents would be sentenced to community service, according to a draft road traffic act to be discussed in Cabinet by the end of September 2008.

Health Minister Evgenii Zhelev and Interior Minister Mihail Mikov announced the proposal at a news conference to announce for the results of the joint campaign to cut accidents on Bulgarian roads.

Mikov said that he welcomed the idea of offenders working in reanimation wards full of road accident victims, mediapool.bg said. However, other forms of community service were possible. The sentence would be for a period between two weeks and a month.

Over the past 45 days, a total of 152 people had received emergency medical aid from emergency teams occupying 28 key positions on the roads, mediapool.bg said. Most of the victims, 88 people, were hospitalised. Another eight had passed away.

Mikov and Zhelev agreed that the inspections had had a good psychological impact on drivers and said that it would be launched again in the summer of 2009.

Traffic police head Alexi Stratiev said that 28 000 drivers without driving licences and 17 000 drunk drivers had been punished during the first eight months of the year. Road accidents mainly resulted from high speed but 10 per cent were caused by drivers without licences and six per cent by drunk drivers.
