Sociologist Roumyana Buchvarova, head of the sociological agency Market Links, told private broadcaster bTV that the reaction to their research claiming that President Georgi Purvanov's rating was decreasing, was that it was "lies, manipulations and a refusal to quote tangible numbers."

Buchvarova said she had expected a more reasonable response instead of what amounted to slander. According to her, the study refuted the official government line.

"It's not just the intelligence and counter-espionage services in Bulgaria that have clearly defined priorities and goals," Mladen Chervenyakov, member of the left-wing Coalition for Bulgaria's parliamentary group told Bulgarian National Television (BNT). "That's why new legislation for the security services is needed." It would need to be decided who will set the priorities. "We should treat the issue of national security especially seriously and carefully."

Chervenyakov's colleague in the parliamentary group Nadya Antonova told BNT that the budget surplus by the end of August was nearly four billion leva. But legally, part ofthe surplus  would be for the fiscal reserve, another part  for the reserve for emergency cases and the sum left for other sectors 1.2 billion leva.

Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria member of Parliament Antonela Poneva told BNT: "News of the world's financial instability is alarming, especially so for a small unstable state like Bulgaria."
