Manchester United's Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov may miss his club's Champions League opener against Villarreal on September 17, Associated Press said.
The agency quoted United manager Alex Ferguson as saying that "he [Berbatov] has swelling in the knee [ ] We are working hard on that but running out of time."
Berbatov, who moved to United in the last minutes before the transfer window closed on September 1 for the impressive sum of 30.75 million pounds, had already played full 90 minutes on his debut in United 1-2 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool on September 13.
Berbatov was on the receiving end of two crunching tackles from Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher early in the game and needed treatment in the second half, but he was not substituted.
The striker's possible absence would be another blow to Ferguson, as midfielder Michael Carrick's foot injury, which he suffered in the same match, will rule him out for up to six weeks.
"Carrick was taken off Saturday [September 13] and it has not turned out well for us," Ferguson said, as quoted by AP. "He has a small crack in his foot, which was diagnosed on Sunday afternoon and he will be out for four to six weeks, which isn't good news."
Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov says he could reconsider international retirement.
