Manchester United's last-minute transfer window signing Dimitar Berbatov, who is poised to make his debut against Liverpool at Anfield on September 13, has said that he would have never joined United's rivals City, no matter how much money they offered, British media reports say.
Berbatov signed with United for £30.75 million (38 million euro) minutes before the transfer window closed on midnight September 1. Only hours earlier, City's new owners Abu Dhabi United Group made an offer of £34 million (42 million euro) for the Bulgarian.
Once they realised Berbatov was committed to joining the Old Trafford side, City turned their attention elsewhere, persuading Robinho to move from Real Madrid for an British record-breaking £32.5million (40 million euro), Daily Mail newspaper reported on September 12.
"I would not even have thought about Manchester City," Berbatov was quoted as saying. "My only goal was to come to Manchester United. My ambitions and goals are big and I want to fulfil them at the biggest club in the world.
"I heard about the offer Manchester City made and the money they want to spend. I was surprised but it did not make any difference to me. I just wanted to come here. That was my only goal - and I achieved it," the striker said.
Meanwhile, United's official website quoted long-serving United stalwart Ryan Giggs as saying that Berbatov had all the right attributes to succeed with the Red Devils.
Berbatov has been training with the club all week, since Bulgaria did not play any qualifying match on September 10, and Giggs, "like every fan, is eagerly anticipating the Bulgarian's first appearance in a red shirt," according to the website.
"Berbatov is a Manchester United-type player," Giggs said. "He offers something a little bit different to Wayne Rooney or Carlos Tevez. For a big man he has a superb touch. [ ]He has a big personality," added Giggs. "It's the sort of personality you need to be a success at Manchester United."
Chelsea managed one goal in spite of thorough domination over the Citizens, maintaining the pressure on both Manchester United and Liverpool at the top of the table.
