Bulgaria's young tennis star Grigor Dimitrov continued his stunning performances this year by winning his second consecutive junior Grand Slam title at the 2008 US Open tennis tournament on September 7 2008.
Just two months ago, 17-year-old Dimitrov won the boys' single title at Wimbledon, becoming the first Bulgarian with a Grand Slam trophy. On court 11 at Flushing Meadows, he proved that it was no fluke, defeating crowd favourite Devin Britton in front of an impressive turnout of fans.
The home support, however, did little to help Britton against Dimitrov's brilliant first service and the Bulgarian "used his steadier baseline game and his speed to secure three breaks in the match for a 6-4, 6-3 win", according to the usopen.org match report.
"Devin gave me a hard time in the first set and especially in the beginning of the second," said Dimitrov, who credited his experience playing the final of Wimbledon for playing with confidence and feeling relaxed in the final. "But I found a way to manage my game, and that was the key," Dimitrov said after the match, as quoted by usopen.org.
His two Grand Slam titles have certainly increased Dimitrov's appetite for further wins and his statement made it clear that he wants to become part of the pro game, having played the last match in the juniors in the US Open final. "It was an important match for me because I wanted to end up [my junior career] in the right way," he said as quoted by usopen.org.
If one judges on the performance of former US Open junior champions at this year's men's singles tournament, one recent winner - Andy Murray (2004) - will face Roger Federer in the final on September 8 having upset world number one Rafael Nadal, which gives Dimitrov reason to have good expectations for next year's Grand Slams season.
The Super Cup – a special game between Poland champion Wisla Krakow and Polish Cup winner Legia Warsaw was to be the first football event scheduled to take place at the venue.
In 2012, the Giants are again the underdogs, after finishing the regular season with a 9-7 record and barely qualifying for the playoffs, compared with the Patriots' 13-3 record.
